What Is Direct-Access Hygiene?

Direct access is a General Dental Council arrangement that allows dental hygienists and therapists to see patients without a prescription or referral from a dentist. You can book straight in for a clean and prevention advice.

The 60-minute appointment gives extra time, which is helpful if you have not had a clean for a while, have noticeable tartar or staining, or want a thorough session with detailed coaching on your home care routine.

Book Your Experience Today

Want a thorough professional clean in Birmingham without waiting for a dental appointment? Our experienced hygiene team can see you directly.

What Your Appointment Includes

The extra time allows for a detailed, unhurried session. It usually involves:

  • A medical history check and gum assessment
  • Thorough removal of tartar above and below the gum line
  • Airflow stain removal where suitable
  • Cleaning between all the teeth
  • Detailed coaching on your home care routine

If your hygienist notices anything that needs a dentist’s attention, such as decay or a broken filling, they will advise you to arrange an appointment.

What Direct Access Does and Does Not Cover

Hygienists and therapists work within a defined scope of practice. They can assess your gums, carry out professional cleaning and give prevention advice without a dentist’s prescription.

Some things do require a dentist. Diagnosing decay, taking most X-rays, prescribing medicines and carrying out fillings, crowns or extractions all need a dentist’s involvement. If your hygienist identifies a problem, they will explain it and recommend you see a dentist, either here or at your own practice.
