New dentures take time to get used to. It is normal for speech and eating to feel unusual at first, and for the mouth to produce more saliva for a few days. Starting with softer foods cut into small pieces and practising speech at home helps most people adapt within a few weeks.
Clean your dentures daily with a soft brush and soap or denture cleaner rather than toothpaste, which can be too abrasive. Leave them out overnight unless advised otherwise, and keep attending check-ups so we can review the fit, your remaining teeth and the health of your gums.
Most dentures are made over several appointments across a few weeks, as each stage is checked before the next. Your dentist will give you a timescale at your consultation.
Denture teeth are available in a wide range of shapes and shades, and we choose them to suit your face, age and remaining teeth. The wax try-in stage lets you see the appearance and ask for changes before the denture is finished.
Eating takes practice. Begin with soft foods, cut them small and chew on both sides at once to keep the denture stable. Most people find it becomes much easier within a few weeks, though very hard or sticky foods can remain difficult.
